From San Ignacio, the road transfer is relatively short, but the experience itself includes a jungle approach, stream crossings, a swim into the cave, wet limestone, and several hours of guided movement in an archaeological setting. The day begins with pickup from your confirmed San Ignacio or nearby Cayo address and travel toward the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. After the guide’s briefing and gear check, the approach follows a jungle trail with multiple water crossings. At the cave entrance, guests enter the stream and swim a short section before continuing through passages that change in depth, footing, and ceiling height.

ATM is also a protected Mayan archaeological site. Ceramics, stoneware, and human remains remain inside the cave, including the calcified skeleton commonly called the Crystal Maiden. The upper chamber is treated differently from an ordinary cave tour: guides enforce preservation rules, and guests follow current footwear and movement instructions to protect the cave floor and artifacts.

No cameras, phones, action cameras, or recording devices are allowed inside. Do not bring equipment expecting an exception. Guests must be able to swim, balance on wet rock, manage uneven terrain, and stay calm in dark enclosed spaces. This tour is not accessible for significant mobility limitations and may be unsuitable for some medical conditions, water anxiety, or claustrophobia.
